Chayei Sarah

Kabbalah teaches that the Hebrew letter Nun created this month of Cheshvan. Nun is considered to be the letter of the Mashiach, the time when the "love your neighbor as yourself" consciousness will prevail in our world. As a verb root, Nun means "to reign." As a noun, it means "heir to the throne" from the word "nin." Cheshvan is the eighth month in the Hebrew calendar and is the month of the Mashiach because eight represents the eternal revelation of the Upper Worlds. Just as the number eight transcends the number seven, so does the number fifty (the numerical value of the letter Nun) transcend forty-nine (seven squared). In our world, the Nun is bent over and represents "falling." For this reason King David did not include it in the acrostic of the Ashrei (Tehilim 145) because it would signify a spiritual falling. With the coming of the age of the Mashiach, the Nun straightens out (the shape of the final Nun) and descends into our world to reveal the Creator's Light. Though the Nun was left out of the Ashrei, during this month we should meditate upon it. Kabbalah says that a person who has fallen and who transforms and elevates themself has more merit than a righteous person who has never fallen. The lesson for us to ponder and meditate upon this month is that all of us fall, even if we have been on the path of transformation for some time. The important thing to remember is that we can always pick ourselves back up and continue in our rectification and ascension. May we be blessed to learn from the letter Nun so that we too may become straightened out like the final Nun and channel the Creator's Light in our world.

Seder Birkat HaLevanah
Our Sages instituted that upon seeing the moon at its first stages after renewal one is to recite a blessing called Birkat HaLevanah. The source of this blessing appears in the Talmud (Sanhedrin 42a) where the sages equate one who blesses the new moon on its proper time to one who greets the Shechinah (Divine Presence). Shirat Ha-Azinu
Ha-Azinu is the song that Hashem instructed Moses to teach all of Israel. “And now, write for yourselves this song, and teach it to the Children of Israel; place it in their mouths, in order that this song shall be for Me as a witness against the Children of Israel.” (Devarim 31:19) The Rambam speaks of a custom to recite Shirat Ha-Azinu at the end of Weekday Shacharit. The Talmud states that Shirat Ha-Azinu was sung by the Levites during the Musaf Offering of every Shabbat (Rosh HaShanah 31a). Tzedakah
The word צדקה "tzedakah" in Hebrew often is translated as charity, but it actually comes from the root צדק "tzedek" which means righteousness. The addition of the letter ה "Hei" connects righteousness to Malchut. Many people say "giving" tzedakah, but the more appropriate phrase is "doing" tzedakah. Tzedakah is in many ways an exchange of energy and is a visible expression of gratitude in this world for that which we have received, especially when we receive it from an organization that helps us to grow spiritually.
