"Hashem spoke to Moses in the Sinai desert." This
is the first line of the book of Bamidbar (Numbers), which we begin
this week. The Midrash Rabba says, "If a person does not make himself
free and open for all, like a desert, he cannot know Torah and its
precepts." What this is essentially saying is that we have to behave
towards all people in the same manner, with love and respect. This
is the goal in our transformation of our ego self. As we learn to
live this way we become more spiritual and closer to the Light. There
is so much negativity in the world today, which makes it more challenging
for us to make the effort to love everyone and see everyone as one.
It is precisely not living this way that is the root of that
negativity. We must be beacons of the Light and dispel the negativity
in our world.
