Loving our neighbor is perhaps the most difficult task we have to
accomplish on our journey. The entire Torah and indeed all
of Kabbalistic wisdom is summed up in loving our neighbor. If
we wish to transform our ego nature, this is the only way it can
be accomplished. All of the tools that Kabbalah gives us are
useless if we are not using them to this end. It is easy to
love those who seem like us or who make us feel "comfortable". If
we extend love to those people, this is a good thing. However,
Kabbalah teaches that loving people who are like us and make us feel
good is the same as loving ourselves and there is no transformation
involved. We must also extend our love to those who make us
feel uncomfortable and who are not like us. This can be a real
challenge, the real bread of shame. Are we really willing to
transform? Are we really willing to love? The real proof
is in our actions and interactions with one another.
